KUALA LUMPUR, SEPTEMBER 24, 2025 – The Second Russian-Malaysian Seminar on Critical Minerals concluded successfully yesterday, reinforcing international research partnerships and capacity-building initiatives in the strategic minerals sector. Jointly organized by Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, and Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, Russia, the seminar took place on September 22–23, 2025.
The event marks a significant continuation of the collaboration established during the First Russian-Malaysian Online Seminar on Strategic Minerals, held on April 16–17, 2025. The inaugural seminar laid the foundation for discussion on the importance of minerals such as rare earth elements and platinum group metals in advancing digital technology, the energy transition, and sustainability initiatives.
This year’s seminar expanded its focus, drawing participation from distinguished scholars, industry leaders, and technical experts. Key sessions featured the latest research in platinum group metals, nickel, and rare earth elements. Innovative topics ranged from AI-driven human capital training for mining and quarrying, to advanced carbon management, geological characterization, and metallurgical solutions.
“The Second seminar continues the vision set forth by its predecessor, cementing the relationship between Malaysia and Russia in strategic minerals innovation,” shared Prof. Ir. Dr. Nik Nazri Nik Ghazali, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya, in his opening address.
The seminar concluded with renewed commitments from both countries to work together on sustainable mineral resource management, with organizers expressing confidence in ongoing joint projects and future seminars.
