Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Raman
Professor

Our current research focuses on developing inherently safer and sustainable chemical processes and materials. These processes include overall or partial production process, and water & waste treatment systems and others. Various approaches in realising this research projects were cleaner production strategies and green chemistry. The projects can be carried out from conceptual, theoretical, experimental, and other related dimensions as we work on real and simulated case studies. The projects can be carried at Master’s, and PhD levels. We also collaborate with other researcher from economic, social, and artificial intelligence dimensions as well. The projects under our group are suitable for both the fresh and candidates with industrial experience.

Ir. Dr. Adeline Chua Seak May
Professor

My research focused on the development of sustainable wastewater treatment processes tailored to tropical climates, with an emphasis on biological nutrient removal and resource recovery. This includes exploring microbial ecology in tropical wastewater treatment plants and extracting valuable resources such as biopolymers, biochemicals, biofuels, and nutrients from agro-industrial waste and wastewater streams. 
I have collaborated extensively with industry and international research partners to improve the energy efficiency and performance of wastewater treatment systems, earning recognition through international funding such as the Newton Fund Impact Scheme. My work integrates kinetic studies, microbiology, and mass transfer mechanisms to enhance treatment processes like the Downflow Hanging Sponge (DHS) reactor for safe water supply and robustness in biological phosphorus removal. 
Additionally, my consultancy projects have supported local and international initiatives, including optimizing extended aeration systems, characterizing wastewater for environmental studies, and reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD) in industrial effluents.

Ir. Dr. Ang Bee Chin
Professor
With a strong background in materials engineering, I am equipped to contribute effectively across a variety of fields. My primary research focus centers on the fabrication and application of electrospun membranes. My current explorations include utilizing these membranes in diverse applications such as wastewater treatment, environmental DNA (eDNA) collection, gas sensing, and tissue engineering development. Additionally, I am actively engaged in research on rare earth materials, conducting failure analysis, and studying thermal fluid dynamics. This multidisciplinary expertise allows me to address complex engineering challenges and innovate within multiple domains.

Ir. Dr. Ngoh Gek Cheng
Professor

My research focused on sustainable bioprocessing, downstream processes, and waste treatment, particularly the development of innovative techniques for biomass utilization, biopolymer production, and wastewater treatment. Key areas include advanced pectin extraction techniques, the use of lignocellulosic biomass for biopolymer synthesis, and the creation of microbial consortia databases for biological wastewater treatment in tropical climates. 

I have also explored the functionalization of graphene for drug delivery applications, enzymatic hydrolysis of agro-waste for fermentable sugars, and the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) from organic wastewaters. My projects emphasize green technologies, such as the use of in-house synthesized solvents and microbial consortia optimization.

Additionally, I contribute as a consultant for various projects, including evaluating extended aeration systems for wastewater treatment and facilitating workshops on outcome-based education (OBE) assessment methods. These efforts align with my broader commitment to advancing sustainable and efficient solutions in bioprocessing and waste management.

Ir. Dr. Rozita Binti Yusoff
Professor

My research focused on advanced separation processes and sustainable materials engineering. This includes CO2 removal using amines, microwave-assisted extraction of active ingredients from herbal plants, and the development of advanced materials such as fiber-reinforced composites and polymeric materials processed through microwave heating. Additionally, my work explores the use of nano-sized calcium carbonate as fillers in PVC and ABS to enhance material properties. 

I have published over 60 papers in journals and conferences, both locally and internationally. My supervision portfolio includes guiding seven PhD and three Master's students to completion, with ongoing supervision of eight PhD and two Master's students. Beyond academic research, I have been actively involved in consultancy projects, particularly in cleaner production practices for industries such as glove manufacturing, and developing tools for waste minimization and resource efficiency.

I also have a significant role in academic administration, having coordinated the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) compliance for the Chemical Engineering Program at the University of Malaya. This included program restructuring, staff training workshops, and ensuring accreditation standards are met.

Ir. Dr. Wan Mohd Ashri Bin Wan Daud
Professor

My research emphasizes the production and characterization of activated carbon, with a focus on its application in environmental and industrial processes. My work explores sustainable materials, particularly utilizing palm shell and other agro-based wastes, to produce activated carbon and develop advanced sorbents, catalysts, and adsorption technologies.

Key projects include developing superacid catalysts for biodiesel production, hydrodeoxygenation processes for bio-oil refining, and CO2 mitigation technologies. I have also conducted parametric and adsorption kinetics studies using activated carbon derived from oil palm waste for post-combustion CO2 capture and biogas purification.

I actively contribute as a reviewer for high-impact international journals and have undertaken consultancy projects to optimize commercial activated carbon production and evaluate industrial processes. My work aligns with sustainability goals and advancing efficient material utilization in environmental engineering and renewable energy sectors.

Ir. Dr. Ching Yern Chee
Professor

My research focuses on the development and application of biopolymer-based nanocomposites and polymeric films, particularly for environmental and packaging applications. I am dedicated to innovating in the field of sustainable materials, with several patents for the production of composite films made from renewable resources like kenaf fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and for methods of producing nanocomposite coatings and films. My work also includes advancements in the electrodeposition of zinc oxide nanostructures and environmentally friendly composite films for agricultural uses, such as mulch films. These innovations aim to provide eco-friendly alternatives to conventional materials, contributing to both sustainability and functionality in diverse industries.

Dr. Badrul Hisham Bin Mohamad Jan
Associate Professor

My research focuses on developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the oil and gas industry, addressing key challenges with cost-effective and environmentally friendly approaches. One of my primary areas of interest is enhanced oil recovery (EOR), where I have successfully formulated a novel palm oil-based emulsifier to improve efficiency. Collaborations with industry partners, such as PETRONAS and BCI Chemical Sdn Bhd, have enabled the practical application of these advancements.  

In the field of drilling and completion fluids, I have developed eco-friendly alternatives, such as dolomite as a non-toxic and cost-effective replacement for barite in drilling fluids. My work on Super Light Weight Completion Fluids (SLWCF) has demonstrated substantial improvements in hydrocarbon flow rates, with successful field testing at the Bunga Raya field near the Malaysia-Vietnam border. These innovations have been presented at international conferences and published in high-impact journals.  

Another significant focus of my research is the characterization and extraction of graphene from industrial waste for diverse applications, including its integration into drilling fluids and wastewater treatment systems. Preliminary findings indicate the potential for optimizing graphene extraction processes to enhance its effectiveness in improving fluid properties and environmental outcomes.  

Additionally, I have explored novel water treatment solutions, such as designing dolomite-based filtration systems to produce high-quality drinking water. This research aligns with my commitment to leveraging local materials and resources to address industrial and community needs.  

Beyond oil and gas, my collaborative work extends to renewable energy and sustainability projects, such as optimizing offshore wind turbines and advancing solar energy storage technologies. These multidisciplinary efforts reflect my broader goal of integrating innovative technologies into the energy sector to drive sustainable development.

Ir. Dr. Nur Awanis Binti Hashim
Associate Professor

My research focuses on membrane technology and fabrication, with a particular emphasis on the development and optimization of polymeric membranes for various applications, including water and wastewater treatment, carbon dioxide capture, and protein separation. I am dedicated to advancing membrane fabrication techniques, particularly the phase inversion process, and have led numerous research projects involving the development of hydrophilic membranes and filtration systems for drinking water. My work also explores the use of membranes in separation processes and their chemical and thermal stability. Additionally, I have collaborated internationally on projects related to water quality and disaster mitigation using membrane technology, and I continue to contribute to both academic and industry advancements in membrane-based solutions.

Ir. Dr. Teoh Wey Yang
Associate Professor

My research focuses on the fundamentals of heterogeneous thermal- and photocatalysis, with a primary goal of addressing energy and environmental challenges. I specialize in developing advanced catalysts for solar hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction, biomass valorization, and the removal of environmental micropollutants. My work includes pioneering photocatalysts for efficient solar activation and designing solar reactors for hydrogen production using machine learning. I am also involved in projects aimed at developing low-cost, high-efficiency solar photocatalysts and exploring sustainable methods for micropollutant removal in soil-less farming. Dr. Adeeb Hayyan

My research focuses on the development of sustainable and innovative solutions for various industrial processes, particularly in the areas of bioactive compound recovery, waste management, and material enhancement. I investigate the optimization of extraction processes, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction for bioactive compounds from Java tea and the use of ionic liquid analogs for oil extraction from rubber seeds. Dr. Hanee Farzana Binti Hizaddin

Ir. Dr. Jegalakshimi Jewaratnam

My research focuses on advanced process control and optimization in bioprocesses, waste recovery and management, environmental health, and quantitative risk assessment. As a senior lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department at Universiti Malaya and coordinator for the Masters of Safety, Health, and Environment Engineering, I have actively engaged in diverse projects. These include investigating enzymatic polymerization for biodegradable polymers, CO2 capture using metal-oxide-impregnated activated carbon, functionalized carbon from local waste for water treatment, and sustainable bioplastics development. Dr. Luqman Hakim Bin Mohd Azmi
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Luqman Hakim has developed a broad career in petrochemicals, manufacturing, and industrial digital technologies in Malaysia and in the UK. After realising the necessity of bridging the gap between basic material science and practical chemical engineering problems in industry, he then pursued his PhD at Imperial College London. Now, as a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaya, he specialises in the development of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas and water purification as well as catalytic reactions. In particular, to increase the efficiency of industrial processes, with an emphasis on removing hazardous organic pollutants from water sources, separating industrial gases and harmful volatile organic compounds from the atmosphere. Dr. Mahar Diana Binti Hamid
Senior Lecturer

My research focuses on combustion technology, process safety, risk engineering, inherent safety, and risk management. As a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya, I have led and contributed to various impactful projects, including the chemical and dynamic analysis of hydrogen-assisted oxy-fuel combustion systems, co-gasification for CO2 capture and storage, and studies on flame stability, laminar burning velocity, and NOX emissions in fossil fuel combustion. Additionally, I have developed occupational safety programs to promote better safety culture among secondary students and contributed to studies on child presence detection systems for enhanced vehicle safety protocols. Dr. Mohamad Fairus Bin Rabuni

My research focuses on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), ceramic and polymeric membrane fabrication, and their diverse applications. I have explored advancements in SOFC technology, including coking-resistant designs and efficient methane-to-energy conversion. Mr. Mohamad Iskandr Bin Mohamad Nor

My research focuses on applying numerical methods in engineering education, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in chemical engineering, engineering software development, and applied numerical methods. I have led and contributed to various projects, including developing hydrophobic dolomite-based filtration systems, modeling mercury partitioning in hydrocarbon fluids, and investigating hydrogen purification using advanced polymeric membranes. Dr. Mohd Faidzul Hakim Bin Mohd Adnan

My research focuses on developing innovative and sustainable solutions for water quality enhancement, pollutant abatement, and resource recovery. I have led projects such as using electrochemical advanced oxidation processes to treat industrial wastewater while recovering value-added compounds. As a co-researcher, I contribute to initiatives like providing clean water to rural communities with smart water purification technologies, studying nitrifying microbial communities in biofilm reactors, and examining ammonia levels in drinking water treatment plants.

Dr. Mohd Usman Bin Mohd Junaidi
Senior Lecturer

My research focuses on developing advanced materials and innovative systems for environmental sustainability, particularly in water purification, hydrogen purification, and waste management. As the principal investigator, I have led projects on creating blended polymer membranes for hydrogen purification from palm oil waste biogas and developing solar-powered, self-cleaning ultrafiltration systems for clean water supply in rural areas. Additionally, I spearheaded the incorporation of hydrophobic dolomite minerals into mixed matrix membranes for efficient water filtration.

I also contribute as a co-researcher to projects investigating rheological mechanisms in rubber-modified bitumen for pavement performance, graphene extraction from industrial waste for drilling fluids, and robust sensor platforms for anaerobic digester lagoons. My international collaborations include portable systems for clean water production and mitigating palm oil waste's environmental impacts.

Dr. Muhamad Fazly Bin Abdul Patah

My research focuses on advancing sustainable technologies through the development and utilization of innovative processes and materials. As a researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaya, I concentrate on the conversion of low-value materials and waste into valuable products such as char, biochar, liquid fuels, and hydrogen-rich gases. My projects span various key areas, including thermochemical processing, chemical upcycling of plastics and biomass, and development of novel filtration systems for water purification.

I lead initiatives on optimizing catalytic processes, hydrodeoxygenation of palm oil for green aviation fuel, and the application of deep eutectic solvents for extracting valuable chemicals from agricultural waste. My contributions extend internationally with projects on characterizing and applying graphene from industrial waste, producing clean energy alternatives, and utilizing refuse-derived fuel for sustainable urban energy systems.

Ir. Dr. Santheraleka Ramanathan

My research focuses on the development of biosensors and nanodiagnostics using sustainable nanomaterials, particularly those derived from environmental waste. I specialize in integrating nanomaterials with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to design highly selective, low-cost sensors for detecting disease biomarkers and environmental pollutants. My work spans electrode fabrication, surface chemistry, and advanced analytical techniques, with recent projects targeting heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals in water and soil. Ir. Dr. Teoh Wen Hui

My research focuses on the study of subcritical and supercritical fluids, exploring their thermodynamic properties and applications in sustainable extraction processes. As a Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya, I specialize in the green extraction of bioactive compounds such as Boswellic acids from plants indigenous to Malaysia, utilizing machine learning and data analytics to enhance extraction efficiency. I hold a B.Eng (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from Cambridge University, UK, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia. I am a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council, UK, and a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. Dr. Zulhelmi Bin Emir
Senior Lecturer

My research focuses on various aspects of petroleum engineering, including oilfield water control, enhanced oil recovery, and flow assurance. As a senior lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Malaya since 2020, I specialize in polymer gels for oil and gas applications, conformance control, and the development of completion and drilling fluids. I hold a B.Eng in Chemical Engineering from Yamagata University (Japan), an MEng.Sc in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Malaya, and a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. My research projects span topics such as hydrogen purification from palm oil waste biogas, production of torrified biomass for power generation, and smart sustainability engineering urban farms. Ir. Dr. Mohd Ali Bin Hashim

Ir. Dr. Mohd Ali Bin Hashim is a distinguished professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaya. Dr. Mohd Ali holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Aston, UK, and an MSc in Biological Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on solid-fluid interactions and ionic liquids, and he has published over 200 research articles and holds more than 20 patents. Dr. Mohd Ali has received numerous accolades, including the National Science Award, and has significantly contributed to the fields of separation processes and green technology

Ir. Dr. Mohd Azlan Bin Hussain

Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Azlan Hussain, a graduate of BSc in Chemical Engineering from Sheffield University (1980), began his career as a design engineer at Esso Production Malaysia before transitioning to academia in 1985 at the University of Malaya. His research interests encompass modeling, process control, and the use of artificial intelligence and nonlinear techniques in engineering. Dr. Hussain has contributed significantly to the field through collaborations with prominent institutions such as Bradford University, Chulalongkorn University, and Kyoto University, producing numerous papers and co-authoring a book. He was instrumental in the establishment of UMPEDAC (Centre for Power Electronics, Drives, Automation and Control), which has received over RM10 million in grants. His leadership roles include organizing major conferences and serving on advisory committees for national and international research projects. With over 150 journal papers, 250 conference proceedings, and the supervision of numerous PhD and Masters students, Dr. Hussain’s research and expertise have earned him multiple awards, including the Top Research Scientist Award from Akademi Sains Malaysia, and recognition in the "Who's Who in the World" and "Who's Who in the 21st Century".
